October 21, 2008 – FP Edge presents danyol.
danyol captures the wit and sexyness of 60’s pop art in his modern art production. His fresh perception of cultural and visual images expands the pop art genre by connecting the public with the private. danyol’s work is a harmonious collage of patterns and textures composed of magazine cutouts, money, and music sheets that reveal the glamour and colorful nature of mass culture.

San Francisco artist danyol was born in 1970 in Orange County California just a stone’s throw away from Disneyland. Growing up he nourished himself on a steady diet of pop art, cubism, and sarcasm. danyol’s use of his own life and surroundings combine to form a dizzying combination of colors, patterns, and textures. These are then masked out by definitive figures and shapes, somehow bringing some definition to his chaos. While bright and smile inducing on initial viewing, look closely at the found objects collaged in the background; they leave hints as to the deeper meaning of the painting. Look at it from one angle and it is seemingly straight forward, but look from another angle in different lighting, and the painting becomes much more. While using equal parts nostalgia and current events together, danyol’s pop-influenced mixed media paintings explore the liminal spaces between surface and emotion; gender role, responsibility and reality; along with other inconsistencies in our fragile social fabric. Student-Run Art Gallery Pairs an Accomplished and Emerging Artists
New art exhibition presents danyol’s first-ever installation

SAN FRANCISCO, September 10, 2009 – The Art Gallery at the SF State Student Center presents Lollipops and Threads, a new exhibition that associates new works by danyol and the recently art school graduated Jai Carrillo. The opening reception will take place on October 9th from 5 to 8 pm. The show runs from October 9th to November 5th, 2008.

“The idea of pairing an accomplished artist such as danyol with an up-and-coming one like Jai Carrillo originates from the Art Gallery’s desire to give more visibility to emerging student and recently graduated artists” says Laura Costantino, co-curator of Lollipops and Threads. “At the Art Gallery -she continues- we feel the importance of discovering new talents.”

Danyol’s new work features, in addition to pop-influenced, colorful, mixed media paintings, his first-ever installation piece. By infusing nostalgic imagery with the urgency of current issues, danyol’s artwork continues to explore the liminal spaces between the inconsistencies of our fragile social fabric.

In a visual contrast with danyol’s work, Jai Carrillo’s pieces adopt a more neutral palette to unveil the limits of genders and gender-related activities. Through the combination of embroidery and boxing, video and bobby pins, Carrillo manages to consistently mix conceptuality and craft.

Last night was so much fun! thanks to everyone who made it out to catch our set. (especially Nadia, aka Merch Bitch, aka nads, aka roomie)

The opening act (shawn something from portland) played a very beautiful set of acoustic diddies that reminded me of a mashed together elliot smith, neil young and willie nelson.

then Carletta Sue Kay took the stage and we played 4 new numbers. some worked...some didnt...but it was a lot of fun testing them out on the hipster bear crowd.

after us was All My Pretty Ones, who simply rocked my box. after losing their drummer 2 days ago, their set was somber, soft and angelic. i always love playing with these gorgeous guys and gals.

Randy, Mark and i went down to LA a few weeks ago to play at thie club called Super Lady! What a blast! Not only did Robyn, David, Carlolyn and Keith rock out to our new tunes, they got to see my debut of playing bass for Woman of Color!

"It's so fucking weird," says Randy Walker, a.k.a. Carletta Sue Kay, singer and songwriter for his eponymous chamber rock quartet. "I'm a total fagatron, but I write sad, heartfelt love songs addressed to imaginary women. Then I throw on a big ugly dress and a bad wig and sing them on stage to an audience of mostly gay men. I guess that makes it queer."

Probably. Either that or Psycho. Walker's made a career of inhabiting various musical personae ever since he scored a Screen Actors Guild card for a production of Peter Pan when he was 10. After moving to San Francisco 12 years ago, he made a splash in queer indie-rock circles as Emile, the oft-bruised lead shouter of thrash-dance foursome Mon Cousin Belge.

The sound of MCB edged outright metal terror with a glimmer of glam, splashing enough contempo-emo sincerity onto the band's hilariously over-the-top antics to light a fire in many a queer boy's heart. (Now recording a CSK album, Walker promises that MCB, which disbanded in May, will return later this year in a sleeker version.)

"I love Emile," Walker says. "I've been being Emile for years, but I'm constantly writing songs — I'm sitting on about 300 — and most of them are just waiting for me to find the right personality inside me to perform them." Thus, in the way of Sybil, Carletta Sue Kay was birthed, to give voice to Walker's more lilting, Emmylou Harris–meets–Magnetic Fields tunes. Backed by Metal Bob on guitar and danyol and Mark Mekaru on piano, cello, rhythm guitar, and accordion, Carletta croons her way through an lovely echo chamber of gender-benders, including "Joy Division," about a girl who loses her boyfriend to the titular band. "Carletta Sue Kay was named after my actual cousin, who's serving time in Iowa for trying to blow up her boyfriend's house. She was charged with possession of terrorist materials," Walker explains. "Isn't that fabulously trashy?" (Marke B.)

My opening is Santa Cruz is gonna rock. big ups to all the people driving down and staying the night. you guys are really gonna help make this event great.

i did 3 new dragonflies for the show on friday. havent done them in a while so i thought i'd try something new...

i got these really cool canvases and couldn't help but bust one out yesterday. i just love the size and shape of them. here it is. the background is made up of a map of SF, german vocabulary flash cards, a christian song book and a letter from my choreographer friend marie.
