tiny
November 5th - December 24th, 2008

STUDIO Gallery

Gallery hours: Wed-Fri 11-8, Sat-Sun 11-6, Mon-Tue by appt.

It's time for tiny, our annual show of small works! The art might be small, but the show is huge: work from 115 local artists will be on display, including many gallery favorites plus a talented group of newcomers. As always, everything's under 7" x 7" and under $400, with many pieces under $150. Whether you're looking for an affordable cityscape or landscape, a wacky little critter to give as a gift, or a fabulous piece of jewelry, we've got you covered. We display 225 pieces on the walls, plus more on tabletops, and we hang new work everyday, so the show is constantly changing.

Whether you're an art lover looking for something for yourself, or searching for a one-of-a-kind gift that also gives back to your local community, tiny is one size that fits all. The show is so big that we're having two receptions, one in November and a second in December that doubles as the 5th anniversary party for the gallery. We hope you'll stop by, see the show, and meet some of the talented artists behind the work.

hanging The Pork Store today!

Here is the press release from Femina Potens:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: October 21, 2008
Contact: Xandra Ibarra, fpedge@gmail.com
Exhibit from October 22, 2008 – December 17, 2008

October 21, 2008 – FP Edge presents danyol.
danyol captures the wit and sexyness of 60’s pop art in his modern art production. His fresh perception of cultural and visual images expands the pop art genre by connecting the public with the private. danyol’s work is a harmonious collage of patterns and textures composed of magazine cutouts, money, and music sheets that reveal the glamour and colorful nature of mass culture.

San Francisco artist danyol was born in 1970 in Orange County California just a stone’s throw away from Disneyland. Growing up he nourished himself on a steady diet of pop art, cubism, and sarcasm. danyol’s use of his own life and surroundings combine to form a dizzying combination of colors, patterns, and textures. These are then masked out by definitive figures and shapes, somehow bringing some definition to his chaos. While bright and smile inducing on initial viewing, look closely at the found objects collaged in the background; they leave hints as to the deeper meaning of the painting. Look at it from one angle and it is seemingly straight forward, but look from another angle in different lighting, and the painting becomes much more. While using equal parts nostalgia and current events together, danyol’s pop-influenced mixed media paintings explore the liminal spaces between surface and emotion; gender role, responsibility and reality; along with other inconsistencies in our fragile social fabric. FP Edge proudly invites you to share the work of danyol. The exhibit runs October 22, 2008 – December 17, 2008 at the Pork Store located at 3122 16th St, San Francisco, CA

FP Edge is an artists' network run by the Femina Potens Art Gallery, focusing on building relationships and recognition between cutting-edge LGBTQI and Erotic artists and artworks, venues and residents within the greater queer, feminist, wellness and sex positive communities. Based in the SF Bay Area, Edge connects a diverse range of artists with the businesses, collectors, exhibitions and other events searching out LGBTQI and erotic-themed works or commissioned pieces. The network also offers the support of the gallery's marketing experience, artist and venue consultation services and a vast list of specialized contacts within the West Coast art scene. NEW SHOW!!! Oct 9th

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Student-Run Art Gallery Pairs an Accomplished and Emerging Artists
New art exhibition presents danyol’s first-ever installation

SAN FRANCISCO, September 10, 2009 – The Art Gallery at the SF State Student Center presents Lollipops and Threads, a new exhibition that associates new works by danyol and the recently art school graduated Jai Carrillo. The opening reception will take place on October 9th from 5 to 8 pm. The show runs from October 9th to November 5th, 2008.

“The idea of pairing an accomplished artist such as danyol with an up-and-coming one like Jai Carrillo originates from the Art Gallery’s desire to give more visibility to emerging student and recently graduated artists” says Laura Costantino, co-curator of Lollipops and Threads. “At the Art Gallery -she continues- we feel the importance of discovering new talents.”

Danyol’s new work features, in addition to pop-influenced, colorful, mixed media paintings, his first-ever installation piece. By infusing nostalgic imagery with the urgency of current issues, danyol’s artwork continues to explore the liminal spaces between the inconsistencies of our fragile social fabric.

In a visual contrast with danyol’s work, Jai Carrillo’s pieces adopt a more neutral palette to unveil the limits of genders and gender-related activities. Through the combination of embroidery and boxing, video and bobby pins, Carrillo manages to consistently mix conceptuality and craft.

Exhibition Curators: Laura Costantino & Daniela Paez
What: Lollipops and Threads
When: October 9, 2008 –November 5, 2008
Cost: FREE

Opening Reception: Thursday October 9, 2008, 5-8pm

Where: The Art Gallery, Cesar Chavez Student Center, San Francisco State University, 1650 Holloway Ave 94132

Gallery Hours: M-F 10a-6p or by appointment.

This year's exhibition, Riots and Revelations, asks: How have riots and revelations been part of our histories and how they will shape the future? Transgender and gender variant artists from across the nation and around the world respond with innovative, startling, moving new work.

Riots and Revelations features work by: Jillian Soto, Danyol, Maya Christina Gonzalez, Miss Day, Noelle Walker, Alex Smith, Aryn Zev, Gariel R. Felix, Henry Schneiderman, R.
